Through visual art, poetry, monologue, music, movement, and collective remembrance, A Eulogy for Jane Doe honors unidentified women and victims of femicide in the United States and along the US/Mexico border.
A Eulogy for Jane Doe began by transforming documented belongings of unidentified women into illustrations, which ten writers then used as inspiration to compose poems—turning evidence of tragedy into evidence of simple moments of meaning and beauty.
By imagining who the Jane Does may have been, the poets sought to give the women back a story, knowing it would never replace the one taken from them.
A Eulogy for Jane Doe continues to grow into a multidisciplinary act of witnessing, bringing together writers, musicians, dancers, students, and activists. It is also expanding to include all victims of femicide—whose lives, identities, and stories — even when their names are known—can be obscured by the violence that ended them.
Poems and original illustrations set to a haunting Bulgarian women's lament offer a glimpse into A Eulogy for Jane Doe—a project asking what it means to remember a woman when violence has obscured her name, her identity, her dreams…
